Younger Employees and Boomer Bosses
Much is said about seasoned managers relating better with Generation Y workers, but what should younger professionals do to work well at the office and get along with older generations?
First of all, Gen Yers don’t have years of experience and perspective about the inner-office politics and personality conflicts that can go along with working within an organization. When they get their first taste of ‘it’ they’re often shocked or dismayed.
They can, and do need however, to acquire moxie and survival skills that go beyond their youth. Some tips for your younger professionals…
- Dialogue with your manager about the skills/experiences you’ll need to be successful.
- Possess a realistic view of what you’re qualified to do. Realize that you lack one thing most organizations highly value—experience.
- Demonstrate your ability in smaller assignments and tasks before you expect to be assigned to more desirable projects.
- Create a solid reputation for your work quality and ability to achieve objectives on time.
- Be willing to learn, learn, learn.
- Build credibility as a go-to person in your company. Soon others will be seeking you out for what you know and can do.
- Deliver more than you were asked to do. Forget whatever you’ve heard about “that’s not my job” and make a habit of going beyond what your boss expected.
- Do everything with a healthy attitude.
