- Make your expectations clear for your team. This should go without saying, unfortunately however, poor communication continues to be a common weakness even for seasoned managers. The bottom-line… make your goals, expectations, deadlines and responsibilities apparent to everyone. Also, it is important to give regular feedback to your people regarding their performance in these areas.
- Don’t do a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. You can and should try to remain the friendly, upbeat person you were before your promotion. Suddenly distancing yourself because you are now the boss sends the wrong message and can create resentment. Continue having pleasant, personalized conversations with your followers.
- Be prepared to be tested. At some point one of your former co-workers will test your leadership authority. With leadership comes the unpleasant task of doling out occasional forms of reprimand or discipline, and someone will likely test to see if you will take action or avoid it. If you want to earn the respect of your people then act with fairness and timeliness when correction is necessary.
- Dole out proper amounts of praise and reward. New managers may be reluctant to give well deserved praise to a follower because it may be perceived as favoritism. However, praise and reward are vital to being an effective leader.
